How do I register a new business?

With the exception of hairdressers/barbers, all new businesses must first obtain their business license within City Hall. Upon acquisition of such license, they may proceed to call in to, submit by mail to, or visit in person the Tax Assessor's Office to complete the process. No other further documentation is necessary for registration of a new business.

How do I obtain a copy of the tax roll and how much does it cost?

To obtain a copy of tax roll or a plat map, please contact Lauren Garzone at the Tax Assessor's Office at 401-421-5900, ext 659.

Copy of Tax Roll is $15 and comes on a computer disk.

Plat Maps

  • Complete set of Plat Maps, 129 Plats/Maps (Black & White) 18x24, is $125
  • Individual Plat Map, Black & White, 18x24, is $10 per Plat
  • Individual Plat Map, Color, 30x36, is $20 per Plat
  • Individual Plat Map, Black & White, 30x36, is $15 per Plat
  • Individual Plat Map, Color, 30x36, is $20 per Plat

How do I enter and read parcel ID?

The following is an example of how to enter and read a parcel identification:

  • City Hall Address: 25 Dorrance Street, Providence
  • The parcel ID for 25 Dorrance Street is 02000380000
  • When entered into system it would be entered as
    _ _ _ - _ _ _ _ - _ _ _ _
  • So the parcel ID would be 020-0038-0000
  1. The first three (3) digits are known as the PLAT.
  2. The next four (4) digits are the LOT.
  3. And for the most part, the last four (4) digits would be zeroes unless it is a condo or unit number.

Are there penalties for not paying taxes?

In accordance with RI General Laws, tax payments are due in full, however, every city and town shall make provision for the payment of taxes in four equal installments. If the first, or any subsequent installment of this bill is not paid on the due date, the whole tax or any balance thereof shall immediately become due and payable with interest. Interest will be charged at a rate of 1% per month on the unpaid balance as of July 1 of the billing year.
