Monsurat Ottun joined the City Solicitor’s Office in April 2018. As an Assistant City Solicitor, Monsurat represents the City in a broad range of civil and criminal litigation matters as well as contracts. She has also worked on open government inquiries relating to the Access to Public Records Act (APRA) and the Open Meetings Act (OMA). Currently, Monsurat is responsible for:
- Prosecution in both the Municipal and District Courts;
- Civil litigation;
- Advising the Providence School Board; and
- Cybersecurity/legal related inquiries.
Prior to joining the City Solicitor’s Office, Monsurat worked briefly for Rhode Island Legal Services handling matters in the Family Court.
Monsurat earned a B.A. from Boston College in 2006 and her J.D. from Roger Williams University School of Law in 2016. During her time at Roger Williams, Monsurat externed for the Honorable O. Rogeriee Thompson of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit for one year.
Monsurat is a 2020 M.S. candidate in Boston College’s Cybersecurity Policy and Governance program and sits on the Mayor’s Muslim American Advisory Board. When she does have free time, she assists small businesses and non-profits with strategic growth and development through her initiative, Cross-Sector Strategies & Solutions, and as a personal coach, she supports women in achieving their career and personal goals.
