Mayor Jorge O. Elorza today joined members of the City Council, Parks Superintendent Wendy Nilsson, Director Joe Salem from Roger Williams Park Services, Rhode Island Foundation Senior Vice President of Strategy and Community, Jessica David and community project partners Cara Burgess, Victor Burgess, and Ed Raff in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Off-Road Bicycle Area at Roger Williams Park. The site provides a safe area dedicated to off-road biking that is open to Mountain, Cyclocross, and BMX bicycles.
“Making considerable investments in the local parks that our families visit is a key part of making neighborhoods across our city stronger and more vibrant,” said Mayor Elorza. “This new Off-Road Bicycle Area provides an opportunity for cyclists of all ages to enjoy Roger Williams Park in a truly unique and dynamic way. I thank all of our community partners and volunteers for their work to make this project possible.”
The 1 acre Off-Road Bicycle Area which is located across the street from the Temple of Music and south of Hamlin Street will be open Monday through Sunday from 7:00 AM to 9:00PM. The area features a pump track, which is a dirt course consisting of rollers and berms that enable riders to propel themselves through the course using their body weight rather than pedaling.
The site was constructed with repurposed materials from past road and field projects and with the help of volunteers from Circuit BMX, the Met School, One Cyclocross Providence, Full Cycle, Roger Williams Parks Department Team, and the Providence Parks & Recreation Department.
Cyclists interested in more information about the Off-Road Bicycle Area can contact the City’s Parks Department at (401)785-9450.
