Fellowships in the City of Providence are an exciting and creative way to get involved in the community, while also gaining valuable work experience. Interns are able to see first-hand how the City functions on a daily basis, as well as learn how long-term goals and policies are constructed. Students gain hands-on experience with City government and develop skills that will serve them well in future occupations.
Summer Mayoral Fellowships
THE FELLOWSHIP
The Mayoral Fellowship is a competitive opportunity designed to give students hands-on work experience in the Executive branch of City government. Mayoral Fellows work under the direct supervision of a Department Director on high-impact projects designed to improve the quality of life for Providence residents. Additionally, through the ‘Lunch and Learn’ series, Fellows are given the opportunity to hear directly from members of the Mayor’s Senior Staff about what it’s like to work in Providence municipal government.
The program also nurtures a positive cohort experience. Through the Lunch and Learn speaker series, fellows participate in roundtable discussions with senior Mayoral staff, elected Rhode Island officials, and Congressional representatives dedicated to public service. Other group outings are scheduled based on summer activities.
Fellows are placed in a city department based on their background, stated interests, and suitability for a given project or office. Former placements have covered policy, communications, constituent services, executive management, legal, and more. Fellows work 35 hours/week for ten weeks and have historically received $2,500 for participating in the program. We are also pleased to work with students interested in pursuing the Fellowship for academic credit.
