Spring Cleaning in the City

Thursday, March 24, 2011

Residents encouraged to call Waste Management to pick up bulky items free of charge and adhere to proper disposal of yard debris.

Leer en espanol: Limpieza de Primavera en la Ciudad

As Providence begins disposing yard debris left over from winter, the City is reminding residents of a few important waste collection programs:

Yard Waste Collection Begins on Monday, April 18
For pickup, residents should put out their yard waste on their regular scheduled trash day.

  • Clippings, leaves, and assorted yard debris should be inside open barrels marked "Yard Debris" or paper yard waste bags; Yard debris stickers are also available at the Office of Neighborhood Services in City Hall, Room 201 and the Department of Public Works, 700 Allens Avenue for residents that would like to repurpose their own receptacles instead of purchasing lawn refuse bags.
  • Branches should not be longer than 4 feet, bundled, and tied with string.
  • Yard waste placed in plastic bags will not be picked up.

Free Pickup of Bulky Items
Residents are required to contact Waste Management at 800-972-4545 at least 24 hours before their regularly scheduled trash collection day to request free pickup of bulky items, such as furniture, mattresses, refrigerators, washers and other large appliances. The free service is designed to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods by ensuring that large discarded bulky items do not become eyesores in the city's neighborhoods.

  • Any household item that does not fit in the Big Green Can is considered a bulky item and needs to be scheduled for bulky item pickup.
  • Residents may schedule a maximum of three large items for pick up.
  • Residents should be prepared to describe each item they would like picked up when they call Waste Management.
  • Only the items scheduled for pick up will be removed.
  • Items should be placed at the curb no earlier than 4pm on the evening before the scheduled pick up.

Failure to schedule an appointment for bulky item removal could result in a notice of environmental violation and subject to a fine.

E-Waste
Waste Management will also pick up unwanted e-waste such as televisions, computers, printers and monitors. Residents may also dispose of their e-waste in the specially designated "e-waste pods" located in the parking lot of DPW at 700 Allens Avenue between the hours of 8:30am to 4:30pm. State law prohibits the disposal of e-waste in trash.

For more information, contact the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services at 421-2489.
