Flood Resilience Public Meeting
June 10 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and the City of Providence are hosting a Public Information meeting, on June 10th at 6 pm virtually, about the Watershed Plan-EA process.
The proposed Woonasquatucket River Watershed Flood Protection Project Watershed Plan – Environmental Document is a joint effort between the USDA – Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the Town of Smithfield and the City of Providence, with sincere support from the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC), to address repeated flooding that causes damages to residential and commercial development and presents a public safety risk during intense rainfall. This project will look at natural and social resource concerns and use engineering analyses to develop alternatives that may be constructed to reduce these flood concerns.
The Woonasquatucket River Watershed has experienced repeated flooding that causes damages to residential and commercial development infrastructure and presents a public safety risk within the developed floodplain during periods of intense rainfall. The preparation of a Watershed Flood Protection Project Plan-Environmental Document that seeks to address these flood risks is currently underway.
Staff from NRCS and the local sponsoring organizations, along with their consultants, will provide information on the flood protection project and the planning activities both to-date and upcoming for the watershed and are very interested in hearing from the public about local flooding concerns.
The planning process is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2022. Federal funding has been received to assist the local sponsors in developing the plan, but has not yet been secured for the design or construction of this project.
