The department consists of 7 Advanced Life Support Rescue Companies, 12 Engine Companies, 7 Ladder Companies, and 1 Special Hazards Unit.
The Department is equipped to respond to all fire, medical emergency, natural disaster, hazmat, and terrorist attacks that occur within Providence and its surrounding communities. Currently, the Fire Department is staffed with 331 members of which 309 firefighters are assigned to each of the four platoons.
In 2016, the Providence Fire Department responded to 43,280 total calls for service. Of the total calls, 28,550 or 65.9% were emergency medical related.
In addition, the Fire Prevention Bureau’s Arson Squad conducted 374 fire investigations.
