PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Elorza today announced the beginning of expanded Summer Recreation programs that include dozens of camp activities, the opening of municipal pools and water parks, the city’s summer meals program, basketball leagues and other summer recreation activities to take place throughout the neighborhoods of Providence.
“I want every child in Providence to have access to healthy, fun and safe activities throughout the summer,” said Mayor Elorza. “From sports camps to pools, water parks, and expanded recreation center activities, Providence is offering more activities than ever before. My priority is to build strong, vibrant neighborhoods and these programs allow us to do just that.”
The City of Providence offers numerous opportunities for city youth for only $5 per week. There will be ten (10) weekly sports camps and five (5) specialty camps with a focus on Creative Arts, Museum, Nature, Dance, and Biking offered all summer long.
In addition to continuing all previous Summer Recreation programs, the 2016 line-up introduces all new programs including bike camp, music and dance camp, and more. There will be a swim meet as well as basketball leagues and camps for youth of all ages. A new International Day Camp will make its debut at the Joslin Recreation Center.
Residents of all ages can enjoy the city’s Fitness in the Park program as well as programs from the Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership. To cool down, the city offers five (5) public swimming pools (Neutaconkanut, Bucklin, Zuccolo, Davey Lopes, and Rogers) and twelve (12) waterparks (General Street, Fargnoli, George J. West, Chad Brown, Billy Taylor, Fox Point, Harriet & Sayles, Richardson, Wallace, Neutaconkanut, Sackett Street, and Zuccolo) in various neighborhoods. Pools and water parks are open from 12PM-5PM Monday through Saturday for the months of July and August. Swimming lessons are offered three times per week.
