Recently, I announced an overhaul of our school department’s central office that will allow us to better serve our students. This is an important step, but this step alone is not enough to give our students the education and experiences they deserve.
This week, the General Assembly is reviewing a proposal that will help the Providence Public Schools move forward.
The state’s current funding formula does not sufficiently support the cost of educating students that are English Language Learners or have special education requirements.
Fortunately, the Governor’s proposed changes to the funding formula demonstrate a commitment to addressing these inequities and will help urban school districts like Providence, where students are at the greatest need.
A strong public education system plays a critical role in attracting new business to our city and the state. The current proposed funding formula will go a long way in supporting our efforts to strengthen the education provided to our students.
I urge the General Assembly to support all students by supporting English Language Learners and special education.
