Mayor Jorge O. Elorza today announced that Colonel Michael Borg will serve as Director of the Providence Emergency Management Agency + Office of Homeland Security.
Colonel Borg is currently a senior adviser to the United States Naval War College in Newport, R.I. and principal adviser to the president of the U.S. Naval War College. His previous experience includes serving as an instructor for the Joint Military Operations Department and command of the coalition and joint Regional Support Command for NATO training operations in Afghanistan.
Col. Borg holds a bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State College in Colorado, and master’s degrees from American Military University and the U.S. Naval War College.
“Colonel Borg is a proven leader who has experience managing cutting-edge crisis response operations,” said Mayor Elorza. “I am excited to welcome such a qualified and capable individual into this critical role.”
As PEMA Director, Col. Borg will oversee the coordination and integration of all activities necessary to build, sustain and improve the capability to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism or other man-made disasters.
Outgoing PEMA Director Col. Peter Gaynor, who has led the agency for seven years, has been tapped to head the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency.
