Data Warehouse and Open Data Portal
Mayor Jorge O. Elorza and the Providence City Council are united in their belief that open and transparent government is essential for the citizens to make informed decisions and hold officials accountable for the conduct of the people’s business. Mayor Elorza and the Providence City Council are committed to open government, transparency and establishments of new standards, as well as mechanisms to enact those standards, and will facilitate the expansion of the public’s access to government and information.
In order to meet these goals, the Information Technology Department has developed a proposal for an internal data warehouse, a web based data input and tracking system, and a public facing open data portal.
Key Milestones
November, 2012 – Providence issues a Request for Proposals from vendors to design, develop and deploy the data warehouse and portal. Interested vendors should contact the City of Providence Purchasing Department for a copy of the RFP.
January, 2013 – The City of Providence has awarded JD Software, Inc. the contract to develop the Data Warehouse and Open Data Portal project. IT held a series of meetings with the vendor and City staff to kick off the project by the end of the month.
March, 2013 – Work continued on the development of an internal survey application to gather performance metrics from city departments. Additionally, the city has contracted with Socrata to provide hosting services on its Open Data Portal platform. Socrata has deployed a test site, and work began to publish internal production data to the public portal.
June, 2013 – Providence became the first municipality in Rhode Island to launch an Open Data Portal, increasing the transparency, accountability and accessibility of public data. The Providence Open Data Portal (http://data.providenceri.gov) was launched with an initial collection of 25 datasets. Work is continuing on the development of the data warehouse, with links to production applications and publication to the data portal. The city will consider additional datasets for publication on a quarterly basis.
