Mayor Brett P. Smiley announced today the Providence School Board Nominating Committee is now accepting applications for qualified candidates to serve on the Providence School Board for region one. Applications are open online now through Friday, December 12, 2025, at 4:30 PM.
“Providence’s schools thrive when our leadership reflects the voices of our community,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “We are looking for School Board members who represent our city’s vibrant neighborhoods and who will serve as strong advocates for our students, families and educators. This process is an opportunity for neighbors to help shape the future of education in Providence. I look forward to working with the community to select dedicated leaders who will strengthen educational opportunities for every student.”
Mayor Smiley will be appointing one member from School Board Region One, which includes Wards One, Two and Three. This appointment will serve a full three-year term, expiring in 2029. Additionally, interested candidates can also connect with current School Board members for further insights about the role.
“As I enter my fifth year of service on the Providence School Board, a journey that began when I was just 19 years old, I’ve come to see how deeply meaningful this work truly is,” said Providence School Board President Ty’Relle Stephens. “Serving on the School Board is not just about policy or procedure; it’s about shaping the future of our children, our neighborhoods, and our city. We’re inviting community members from Region One to lend their voices, experiences, and leadership to this important effort as we continue working alongside Mayor Smiley and his team to strengthen Providence public schools.”
Submitted applications will be reviewed by the School Board Nominating Committee. Applicants will be asked to participate in a public forum on December 16, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Providence Career and Technical Academy (PCTA) located at 41 Fricker St., Providence, RI 02903. Community members can submit questions prior to the forum to help guide the moderated discussion and ensure it addresses community needs. After applicants have completed both steps, the Committee will recommend candidates to Mayor Smiley, who will then submit School Board nominees to the City Council for review.
“Our schools are the heart of our community, and Providence’s greatest strength is the people who care deeply about our children’s future,” said Providence Public School Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez. “Right now, we have an opportunity to bring together dedicated leaders who believe in our students’ limitless potential. If you’re a Providence resident like me who shares that belief and wants to help shape their success, I encourage you to step forward and apply. Together, we can keep building schools where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to thrive.”
