Mayor Jorge Elorza today announced the nomination of Charles Newton to the Providence Board of Licenses.
“Charles brings a wealth of experience assisting businesses and a deep understanding of the Providence community to the Board,” said Mayor Elorza. “I am excited to nominate this strong candidate and I look forward to working with him to help facilitate business and economic expansion in Providence.”
Newton currently serves as Assistant Administrator for the state’s Minority Business Compliance Office within the Department of Administration as well as serving on the Ocean State Business Development Authority, Housing Resource Commission, Neighborhood Development Fund and numerous other organizations. His career includes more than 25 years of work for the State of Rhode Island facilitating minority business programs, 12 years with WJAR-TV and work with the RI Black Heritage Society, the United Way, Providence Zoning Board and other boards and community groups.
Newton will fill a vacancy on the 5-member board created when then-chair Rev. Jeffery Williams announced he was stepping down to begin the process of being elevated to the position of Bishop within his church.
