The City of Providence has created a guide to help the public understand new Rhode Island regulations on Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). It includes illustrated configurations, definitions, zoning rules, and requirements for establishing an ADU. Defined as an independent living unit on the same lot as a residential dwelling, an ADU must have separate cooking and sanitary facilities. The guide covers size limits (900 sq. ft. for a studio/one-bedroom, 1200 sq. ft. for a two-bedroom), short-term rental restrictions, and zoning compliance. It also explains the two ADU types—Separate and Internal—and details the process for obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy.
