$50 fines will be issued to drivers going 11 mph or more over the limit in school zones
The City of Providence today announced that Portable Camera Units (PCUs) will resume operation in school zones beginning Wednesday, August 27, 2025. The cameras will operate on all school days, Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 6 PM. Cameras will issue violations beginning that day.
Current camera locations include Union Avenue and Waverly Street; 156 Reservoir Ave.; 500 Hope St.; Hartford Avenue at Longo Street; Prairie Avenue at Ocean Street; Eaton Street at Roslyn Avenue; 812 Douglas Ave.; 961 Eddy St.; Dexter Street at Daboll Street; 93 Cranston St.; 187 Douglas Ave.; 179 Thurbers Ave.; Blackstone Boulevard SB at University Avenue; across from 331 Hope St.; Bridgham Street at Fales Street; Branch Avenue at Burleigh Street; 417 Charles St.; 301 Butler Ave.; and across from 114 Olney St.
The PCUs are used to enforce speed limit violations and increase public safety measures for both pedestrians and drivers. These cameras, first activated in January of 2018, are strategically placed in areas with problematic traffic and speed concerns.
If a vehicle is determined by the PCU to be operating 11 mph or more over the speed limit, a violation will automatically be issued. Each violation is reviewed by Providence Police officers and Modaxo, an outside vendor who manages and maintains the cameras. Once the violation is reviewed for accuracy and the information is verified, a ticket is then mailed to the offender for payment. The first and each subsequent fine is $50.00. Increased signage will be placed in areas where speed limit laws will be photo enforced.
