About This Discussion
The City is exploring the creation of a Student Housing Overlay District in portions of the neighborhoods surrounding Providence College.
The purpose of this community meeting is to share information, explain the planning considerations behind the proposal, and gather feedback from residents, property owners, students, and community stakeholders before any formal zoning amendment moves forward through the City’s public review process.
This meeting is intended to provide an opportunity for community members to learn more, ask questions, and help inform the City’s approach.
Why Is This Being Considered?
The neighborhoods surrounding Providence College have experienced unique housing and land use challenges related to the concentration of student housing, rental properties, and long-term residential uses.
The City is evaluating whether a Student Housing Overlay District could provide additional tools to:
- Support neighborhood stability
- Improve compatibility between student housing and surrounding residential areas
- Clarify expectations for property owners and tenants
- Address long-term planning goals for the area
- Balance the needs of residents, students, institutions, and property owners
What Happens Next?
This meeting is part of an early community engagement process. Following the meeting, City staff will make recommendations to the City Council. If an ordinance is introduced, additional opportunities for public comment would be available through future public hearings before the City Plan Commission and Providence City Council.
