Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza today donated more than 275 decommissioned mobile phones to the Attorney General’s Office for their phone recycling drive to support victims of domestic violence and the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
“The City is proud that these old and unused cell phones will now assist in the worthy effort to provide victims of domestic violence with the tools they need to seek help,” said Mayor Elorza. “I hope this donation empowers more people to take part in this incredible program, and I thank Attorney General Kilmartin and his office for their efforts.”
The decommissioned phones were collected from departments throughout the city including public works, public safety, telecommunications and administrative offices.
“I am grateful to Mayor Elorza and the City of Providence for their support of our cell phone drive to benefit victims of domestic violence. So many of us never think about how a simple cell phone can be a lifesaving device for someone in an abusive situation, and it’s through the generosity of this program that we are able to provide a lifeline to someone in need.”
The recycling program is sponsored by the Office of Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin, the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Verizon’s HopeLine™ program, which supports similar programs throughout the country.
