Parking on any street in Providence is banned overnight without an overnight parking permit. During parking bans declared by the City in a snow emergency, all residents, even those with an overnight parking permit are forbidden to park on city streets.
Since many Providence residents do not have access to an off-street parking space, the Smiley Administration has expanded snow parking options beginning in the Winter of 2025 following a successful snow parking pilot program.
This winter, Providence overnight parking permit holders will be able to park at one of sixteen approved locations citywide. The approved locations are listed below. If there is not an approved location in your area, you may park in a nearby approved location. The approved locations include:
- On-street locations adjacent to city parks,
- Parking lots within city parks,
- And a few on-street locations on particularly wide streets.
For example: A snow parking ban is announced to be in effect at 6pm on Tuesday. Residents in the pilot wards can park in an approved location once the parking ban goes into effect. If that parking ban is lifted at 6pm the following day (Wednesday in our example), residents have until 2:00am Thursday to move their vehicle from the approved location. If residents leave their cars in the approved location after the 8-hour grace period they will be subject to ticketing and towing to allow city plows to come back and complete plowing in a timely manner.
Please note: Snow parking IS enforceable by the police. If you are parked on-street in a location not approved for snow parking, you are subject to ticketing and towing. Parking next to fire hydrants or in front of fire stations is STILL forbidden during a snowstorm.
