Providence Parks
Amos Earley Park
History
Quietly tucked away from the highway noise, the land was deeded to the city in 1989 and developed as a park in the mid 1990’s. From 1906 to 1925 the land in this park and in present day Sackett Street Park was known as Melrose Park, a privately owned athletic area that featured professional baseball and football teams. The Providence Grays, a former major league team in the 1880’s, was also the name of a professional minor league baseball team that played at Melrose Park from 1914-1918. The 1914 team featured Babe Ruth for 2 months before he was called up to the Boston Red Sox (Providence Journal).
A lap around the walking track measures one-quarter mile.
