Providence Parks
Amtrak Station Park
History
Sitting atop of a parking garage, the Providence Amtrak Station grounds have been reimagined as an urban wildflower meadow. In fall of 2022, in collaboration with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Foundation and the University of Rhode Island, we planted 7,000 ecotypic native plants, 11,500 bulbs and dozens of species of wildflower and grass seed.
Amtrak Station Park was designed and built by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. In 2018, the Providence Parks Department assumed maintenance of the park.
Maintenance
Friends of Station Park Meadow perform weekly 3-hour garden maintenance shifts every Wednesday, 8:30-11:30am. Everyone (age 18+) is encouraged to join!
The nearby Station Park at Francis and Gaspee Streets– on the opposite side of the train station– is administered by the State of Rhode Island.
Recent Improvements
- Parks Department restored the decorative concrete terrace with 25ft diameter stamped compass design in Fall of 2025.
- Urban Wildflower meadow ribbon cutting was held in 2023.
- Initial landscaping added 2020.
