Providence Parks
Arthur & Ruby Lawrence Park
History
The park was built on a vacant lot circa 2002.
In 2014 it was renamed after Arthur and Ruby Lawrence- a couple who have spent most of their 75 years of marriage at the blue house around the corner.
Moving to Providence from South Carolina, Arthur worked as a marine mechanic and Ruby as a welder. They formed a church in their living room and later, when membership diminished and the congregation moved, parlayed the remaining resources into a scholarship fund at Hope and Central high schools. Over the years, these two have remained an inspiration in the community. “When everything’s falling apart, you could always come here,” said Charles Lawrence, a retired Providence Fire Department captain and their grandson. – The Providence Journal
