History

Burnside Park, nestled in the heart of downtown Providence between Washington and Exchange Streets, is a historic park adjacent to Kennedy Plaza. It was once known as “Depot” Park as the area has long been the central transportation hub of Providence, going back to the rail- and streetcar- dominated eras. Enclosed by a classic wrought iron fence, the park features shaded walkways, benches, and open green spaces, serving as a central gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

Burnside Park is a vibrant venue for various events throughout the year, including concerts, public art installations, and festivals like PVD Fest. Its central location and welcoming atmosphere make it a focal point for cultural and recreational activities in Providence.

Carrie Brown Bajnotti Memorial Fountain

At the center of Burnside Park stands the Carrie Brown Bajnotti Memorial Fountain, a striking bronze and granite sculpture completed in 1902. Commissioned by Count Paul Bajnotti of Turin, Italy, the fountain honors his late wife, Carrie Mathilde Brown, a Providence native and granddaughter of Brown University benefactor Nicholas Brown II. Sculpted by Enid Yandell, one of the first prominent female sculptors in the U.S., the fountain embodies allegorical figures representing the “Struggle of Life.” In the summer of 2024, the fountain underwent a significant renovation, restoring its intricate details and ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Major General Ambrose E. Burnside

The monument honors Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, a Union Army officer during the Civil War who went on to serve as Governor of Rhode Island and as a U.S. Senator

Brandon’s Beach Playground

In 2017, Brandon’s Beach playground was introduced within Burnside Park, offering a nautical-themed, inclusive play area for children of all abilities. Inspired by Providence’s maritime heritage, the playground features climbing structures, slides, swings, and sensory-rich equipment. It was established in memory of Brandon Goldner, the late son of Hasbro Chairman and CEO Brian Goldner and his wife, Barbara, serving as a heartfelt tribute and a cherished space for families in the community.
