Providence Parks
Cheryl M. Fisher-Allen Park
History
Lot was deeded to the city in 1938. The tot lot is more recent and features natural play features for 2–5-year-olds. It was fittingly dedicated to beloved teacher and community leader, Cheryl M. Fisher-Allen. A former Providence Teacher of the Year (1989) who taught kindergarten through grade six at Providence’s International Studies Magnet Program, she was honored with a resolution from the City Council. In 1985, this 17-year veteran of the Providence school system received a citation from the speaker of the House of Representatives for coordinating a program called “Children Helping Children,” which kicked off a city-wide fundraiser for victims of famine in Ethiopia. Locally she helped students realize the importance of reading with her Celebrity Reader Program. Despite her many personal achievements, she was most proud of one produced by her students: a 1984 play honoring a visit by Rosa Parks to Rhode Island.
