History
The gateway to the Elmwood and Reservoir Neighborhoods in Providence’s South Side, this park received its name in 1895 when the statue of Columbus was installed by the Elmwood Club and local Elmwood residents. The bronze sculpture was cast by the local Gorham Company located a few hundred yards away (now the site of Mashapaug Park) and is based on a design by Auguste Bartholdi who designed the Statue of Liberty. The statue was decommissioned in 2021 and is now located outside of the City of Providence, at Johnston Memorial Park on Hartford Avenue.
