Conlan Junior Park
History
Conlan Junior Memorial Park was deeded to the city in 1908. Sometime before 1957, the park was named for a young West End resident named Conlan Jr., possibly a war casualty or local youth memorialized by the community. Information on this is relatively scant. Its alternate name, Mansion Park, derives from the “country estate” belonging to Joseph Chapin (1788-1881) that once occupied the site. Chapin was active in manufacturing both cotton and wool (“Biographies: Providence County, Rhode Island,” Genealogy Trails).
The park also offers 1.7 acres of passive green space for the public to enjoy. Walking the path through the center of the park then along the park frontage on Sorrento and Waverly Streets makes a loop of approximately two-tenths of a mile.
