History

The Square is named after Admiral Esek Hopkins and functioned as the Hopkins family burial ground before the graves were reinterred at the North Burial Ground. Today, the Square features a prominent statue of Esek Hopkins. Like many other statues throughout the city, it was cast at the former Gorham factory, a sprawling 37-acre industrial plant once located in Elmwood. The square is situated between Ascham St. Park to the East and Prete-Metcalf Park to the West, one block away from each via Hawkins St.

There are several Veterans memorial markers in the square:

  • Private Nicholas Iacono, WWI, dedicated 1935.
  • Nicholas Barone
  • Joseph Bucci

Recent Improvements

  • Updated furnishings and improvements coming in 2026.
  • Since 2025, the nearby St. Ann’s Piazza at 578 Charles St is maintained by the church under a long-term lease agreement with the Providence Public Building Authority.
