Providence Parks
J.T. Owens Park
History
Formerly a state facility, this park was deeded to Providence in the 1980’s. It is located on the eastern edge of Mashapaug Pond and contains a mural and cherry orchard commemorating the West Elmwood neighborhood. This 100+ acre residential neighborhood was razed in the urban renewal of the1960’s, displacing over 385 families to create the Huntington Expressway Industrial Park. The park features over 0.35 miles of paved walking paths. The park’s playground was dedicated to memory of West Elmwood community leader Ed Hooks in 2023. The home of Elmwood Little League for almost 70 years, this park hosted the 2025 Mayor’s Cup Little League Baseball tournament.
Recent Improvements
Park improvements completed in October 2023 include an enlarged playground area featuring brand new play equipment for children ages 2-12, along with several new native tree plantings. The trees will provide much-needed shade, carbon and stormwater sequestration, and biodiversity.
