Providence Parks
M.E. Sharpe Park
History
Deeded to the City in 1941 and named for Mary Elizabeth Sharpe, a prominent environmentalist, author, self-taught landscape architect, and philanthropist (RI Heritage Hall of Fame). She established an annual tree planting fund which saw the growth of 3,000 new trees in the city under her oversight. She was instrumental in the development of India Point Park and helped in the design of the Japanese Gardens at Roger Williams Park. Additionally, Mary promoted the beautification of Brown University’s campus. A champion of the arts, her impact continues to this day by bringing the Community Concert Series to Providence which is still in operation.
