History

Fondly called “Neut” by most Providence residents, this 88-acre park offers the city parkgoer some of the most enjoyable “back-to-nature” experiences. Due to the partnership between the Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy and the Parks Department, the trail system traversing the hill that dates to the 1930s was restored between 2004 and 2012.

There are parking lots on either side of the developed areas of the park, Killingly St (little league baseball field) and Plainfield Streets (playground, skate park, recreation center with waterpark). There is an additional pedestrian entrance at the corner of Duxbury St at Plainfield St by the basketball court. There are more than 2/3 of a mile of paved, lit walking paths throughout the park’s lower section, connecting all three park entrances and major amenities.

The Latest

Neutaconkanut Hill Park is Rhode Island’s newest entry in the National Register of Historic Places. Located in Providence’s Silver Lake neighborhood, it was established in 1903 and expanded to its current 85-acre dimensions by 1960. Neutaconkanut is significant to the history of community planning and recreation in Providence.

The park contains 23 contributing resources — including WPA projects from the 1930s, ruins associated with early settlers on the hill, the former King’s Estate, and landscape features from the park’s early days. At 296 feet above sea level, Neutaconkanut Hill is the highest point in Providence.
