History

The walking track was named for the labor leader Arthur Coia. It measures one quarter mile around the senior baseball field, Metcalf Field. Named after Providence City Councilman Frank A. Prete, the smaller field nearest the playground is the historic home of the North End-Wanskuck Little League. A third field for softball is mostly used by the Hopkins Middle School for recreation. The park dates to the 1950’s and is built upon land filled in that formerly included Leonard’s Pond. The park abuts the West River, a tributary of the Moshassuck River, on 10 acres located a block west of Hopkins Square. It is accessible via Hawkins St and Charles St by the Hopkins Middle School.
