Riverside Park
History
The textile mill located on this park land burned down in 1989. In the subsequent 1990’s, the Providence Parks Department in partnership with the Providence Plan, Rhode Island DOT, Rhode Island DEM, and the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) developed a park and bikeway from that was finished in 2006. This park is a true Providence gem that reflects the labor of the neighborhood groups that worked to build it. Built in 2016, the Red Shed bicycle repair facility and outdoor stage offer unique amenities and are maintained and operated by the WRWC. The playground equipment was installed in 2011 and is different than anything else in the Providence Parks Department system.
The park is situated along a 2.4-mile bike path to Johnston, 0.4-miles of which pass through the park. It is also one of the most complete access points to the Woonasquatucket River in Providence, notable for its dam with a fish ladder to allow fish to travel upstream to spawn.
