Providence Parks
Roger Williams Landing
History
This park sits across Gano St from Gano Park and was deeded to the City in 1854. Its prominent monument marks the historic landing site of Roger Williams along the Seekonk River. The sculpture of Roger Williams at Prospect Terrace was made from Westerly Granite, which is the base for many other sculptures in Providence. Unlike other types of granite, it is exceptionally smooth and uniform. Though the quarries were dangerous places, it was prized material for statues in the Northeast. By the 1950s, however, fewer people were decorating their homes with Victorian-style stone statues–metal and glass were more popular. The last operator went of business in 1946 (Providence Journal).
Recent Improvements
- The plaques on the monument commemorating Roger Williams were refurbished in 2016 with support from the Fox Point Neighborhood Association.
